Be Set Free
John 8:34-36
“Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.’”
Before I truly gave my heart and life to Christ, it seemed I could not do anything but sin. Occasionally, I made a meager attempt to do a kind and loving unselfish act, but afterwards I realized I had a sinful motive or attitude in doing it.
No matter how often I tried, or how much I wished I could be different, I felt hopeless, helpless, and trapped. I was a slave to sin, and I thought nothing would ever change.
This led to the very dark bondage of suicidal depression. I was homeless and unemployed. I didn’t feel as if I mattered. I was a loner, and belonged to nothing and no-one except sin and the devil.
Others around me could not help me; they were slaves too. Our master, the devil, was not interested in setting anyone free.
But when I came to know the Son, I learned He defeated my old master. He had the power to set me free. He had the will for me to be free as He proved in His sacrificial death. In His victorious resurrection, He conquered sin and led long-held captives free forever.
I was one of them. Have you been set free by the Son?
