The Counselor of Truth

 In Daily Devotional

John 14:16-17

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”

Can you imagine what the Disciples must have been thinking when Jesus told them it is better for them if He goes away? They had been with Him almost constantly for three years or more. They had been learning from Him, watching Him work powerful miracles, seeing Him demonstrate mercy, love and compassion, and hearing Him speak Truth to everyone at all times. Everything was great!

But they could only experience this in His immediate physical presence. Sometimes they were separated from Him and things did not go so well. For example, they floundered in the midst of the storm on the sea when Jesus sent them ahead to the other side.

Jesus tells them in today’s scripture they will have His Spirit living inside them when He goes away, therefore, His Spirit will never leave them. They will always have His Presence.

This is unique to true disciples. “The world” does not accept Jesus, has no relationship with Him, and, therefore, cannot have His Spirit. They cannot recognize the Truth they so desperately need.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE:

Tell the Father you are thankful for having His Counselor of Truth living inside you. Ask Him to help you listen closely to His wisdom and follow His direction.
