The Active Agent in Creation

 In Daily Devotional

Genesis 1:2

“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”

Yesterday we were reminded that Jesus, the Word, was in the beginning with God at the moment of Creation. Today, we see that the Holy Spirit was present as well, and waiting for the Father to speak the Word.

Our verse states that the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. With air and water is the potential for life, and all the potential in the Universe was brought forth from the mouth of the Father when He spoke the Living Word for the Holy Spirit to implement. The breath of God, the Holy Spirit, carried forth the Word to create. The Holy Spirit is the active creative power of the Father.

The Spirit was not only active at Creation. He was also active in the Incarnation of Jesus, the last Adam (see Matthew 1:18-23). The Spirit was actively involved in the indwelling of the first believers (see John 20:21) and every believer since then. The creation of “the Church” with power was initiated by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (see Acts 1:4-8 and 2:1-4).

In the Resurrection, the Holy Spirit was the active force of creating “the Second Man” in raising Jesus from the dead (see Romans 8:11, 29; Hebrews 9:14; and Colossians 1:18). Finally, the Holy Spirit was involved in creating the “new you” (see John 3:5 and 2 Corinthians 5:17)!

TODAY’S CHALLENGE:

Thank the Father for His Word, Jesus, and the active power of Creation, His Holy Spirit.

Allow His active, creative power to lead you today.
