Spirit-Enabled Tongues
Acts 2:1-4
“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”
There has been quite a bit of discourse and writings about this first appearance of Spirit-enabled tongues in the New Testament, as well as a lot of controversy and confusion.
I don’t know all the answers or ramifications concerning this gift that came with Power, but I know a few over-riding truths that lead me to want to know more. I am willing to keep an open mind because I want absolutely everything the Holy Spirit wants to empower and bless me with. Do you?
This in fact was prophesied about 700 years earlier in Isaiah 28:11 – but also see Isaiah 28:1-15 for context with the entire chapter. Verse 12 indicates there is rest and refreshment for us!
Isaiah 28:13 implies knowledge from His Word accompanies it, and I imagine this includes the “Rhema”, God-spoken Word referred to in Romans 10:17, where we are told that “faith comes by hearing…”. Isaiah 28:15 talks of protection. Jude 1:20-21 talks of being built up, or edification.
Rest, refreshment, knowledge, protection and edification – do you think these may all be part of the many benefits of tongues?
TODAY’S CHALLENGE:
Tell the Father you want Him to progressively reveal why He and Jesus sent the Holy Spirit with the gift of tongues.
God has all the answers. Ask Him.
