A Good Father Gives the Best Gifts

 In Daily Devotional

Luke 11:11-13

“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

In this passage of scripture, Jesus had just before been teaching His disciples to pray, and had emphasized to them the importance for them to ask, seek and knock! “For everyone who asks receives…” For context, see Luke 11:1-10.

As earthly fathers, we can relate to the requests of our children. Sometimes their innocence just melts your heart doesn’t it? If it is within our power, and does not harm them, we will give them whatever they ask.

Our verse today probably does not refer to the indwelling of the Spirit when we are re-born since we all receive this automatically. So, many believe Jesus is talking about the baptism of the Holy Spirit that He promises His followers.

If as imperfect earthly fathers, we give good gifts to our children, how much more will our perfect and great Heavenly Father give the best gifts to His children who ask Him?

In my opinion, after salvation, the Baptism of the Holy Spirit may be the very best gift.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE:

Ask your Heavenly Father for His Holy Spirit. He desires to give you the best gifts. He knows what you need. He would never give you anything to harm you.

Receive His best gift for you.
