What God Asks of Us

Deuteronomy 10:12-13

“And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to observe the LORD’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?”

At first glance, today’s passage may be intimidating; but it answers the question many of us have asked – what does God want from me? What is my proper response to God’s overwhelming grace, mercy and love?

If we truly understood and met the first requirement – “to fear the Lord your God” – I believe everything else would naturally follow with little effort. This is not the kind of fear that makes one want to run and hide, or freezes one from any action at all. Rather, this is to approach the Lord God in holy reverence, childlike awe, and ultimate respect.

This is the proper attitude we need to begin to comprehend the unlimited, unconditional love God has for each and every one of us as His unique sons and daughters. The more we are able to progressively believe and receive this incredible gift, the more we will naturally want to please Him with our entire being.

It is from this love that we learn it is for our own ultimate good that we observe the Lord’s commands and decrees, walk in obedience to Him, and serve Him with all our heart and soul.

Thank the Father for His unconditional love expressed in the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you the fear of the Lord, and empower you to serve Him obediently.
